If you are teaching remotely, you may not have all of the curriculum materials that you typically use. There are many great resources to enhance your virtual teaching. For math, there is Kahn Academy. Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2008 by Salman Khan with the goal of creating a set of online tools that help educate students. The organization produces short lessons in the form of videos website also includes supplementary practice exercises and materials for educators. All resources are available for free to users of the website and app. Click here for a quick start guide if you haven’t used Kahn Academy before.
Some tips for using Kahn Academy in conjunction with virtual teaching are:
1. Ask students to view a specific Kahn Academy video BEFORE connecting to the virtual session. Suggest that they take notes and write down questions so they are ready to discuss the content.
2. Use a Kahn Academy video to support something you have presented virtually. Students can watch the video at home as many times as they need to while working through problems you have assigned.
3. During a video conference, you can share your screen and show a video. However, know that doing this takes good internet bandwidth from you and from the students so it might be better to reference the video and then have students watch it after the video conference.
Resources like Kahn Academy help support your instruction but don’t replace you. Your students still need you to answer questions and keep them progressing through concepts.
