Hi! We are Parker, McKenna, Christine, and Brady—the C.U.E. (Connect, Unite, Evoke) students! We are all part of the Franke Global Leadership Initiative at the University of Montana. Our interdisciplinary capstone project is focused on a shared love of reading and exploring new cultures. We hope to inspire the next generation of students to find joy through the written word. As part of this process, we designed and delivered two lesson plans to students at several of Montana's elementary and middle schools. How did it go? Check out this video from teachers, principals, and our advisor!
We encourage you to use these lessons in your classroom. Each lesson comes with an accompanying slide show and lesson plan.
Did you know that Harry Potter has been translated into 88 languages and is loved by students (and teachers) worldwide? When books are brought to a new culture, certain aspects are often adjusted to make them feel more familiar to their new audience. This lesson looks at Harry Potter covers from around the world as a way to introduce students to new cultures.
Ideal for grades 1-5
Many students are becoming invested in Japanese stories: Pokémon, Naruto, and My Hero Academia are three immensely popular anime among American youth. This lesson, aimed towards grades four through eight, walks students through how to read manga (Japanese graphic novels, on which many of these anime are based) and the lively cultural exchange between the United States and Japan.
